Mix & Match Easter Brunch Outfit

Mix & Match Easter Brunch Outfit

Madewell Chambray Shirt // H&M White Tee // Forever 21 Woven Capri Pants // Forever 21 Self-Tie Wrap Skirt // Bauble Bar Statement Necklace // Madewell Skimmer Flats

One of the best parts of Easter is the delicious brunch. Unfortunately this year my family waited to the last minute to make a brunch reservation. Needless to say, everything was booked. But, my mom is planning a big homemade breakfast, which I'm really looking forward to. Plus, I can sleep in:)!

For those of you who are attending Easter brunch, I've put together a few reasonably priced pieces that you can purchase last minute for the perfect Easter outfit. Even if you don't have time to go out shopping for a new outfit, these may give you some inspiration. I especially love the color palate of the pieces. Pastels are very trendy right now and are perfect for the Easter holiday. They can also be worn for the rest of the spring season, so you'll definitely get your money's worth with some new coral pants or yellow skirt.

Overall, think pastel pinks, yellows, greens and blues as your color scheme or pop of color. Florals also work great, such as the floral Madewell Skimmers shown above. I plan on wearing coral pants, a chambray button-down and statement necklace. What are you planning on wearing for Easter brunch?!

Tuesday Inspiration

This week has been crazy and hectic so far with exams and presentations. As I'm studying away at my desk and worrying about everything I need to get done, I have to keep reminding myself of this: "the future is no place to place your better days." To be happy, you can't keep anticipating all of the things you have to get done in the future, otherwise you can't be content in the present. I make this mistake all the time, and I'm really trying to work on it. This week I can't help but think that this weekend will be so much better after my last round of midterms is over. But, I've found it to be a little easier today, as I look around Boston and see how beautiful the city is in the sun, to enjoy the present. That's another reason why I picked this quote; the flowers made me think of spring and how I'm starting to feel it already! I hope you all are having lovely weeks and are only worrying about how great the present is rather than the stress of the future. Be happy and enjoy this sunny weather!

Early Spring Layering

It's officially spring! Too bad I can't even tell with snow on the ground. At least when the suns out you can feel the warmth of spring coming. Otherwise, March is really unpredictable, so it's good to layer. The perfect outfit for in-between warm/cold weather is: jeans, flannel, thick cardigan and puffer vest. It's comfortable, casual and put together.

Vest: Ralph Lauren Polo (Purchased from T.J. Maxx) // Sweater: Forever 21 // Flannel: J.Crew // Jeans: American Eagle // Boots: Steve Madden
Photos taken by: Drew McLoon

These photos were actually taken a few weeks ago before spring break. I was clearly being a little diva in the last picture because I was eagerly awaiting my flight to Florida in a couple days. If only I could go back now! Anyway, I hope this outfit helps you plan what to wear in this awkward in-between cold and warm spring weather. I hope it gets warm enough for a light jacket soon! What's your go-to outfit for this type of weather? I'd love to hear your ideas:).

Last Weekend: Stephen Lynch

I know this is a bit late, but I wanted to share some pictures from last weekend when my friends and I went to see the comedian Stephen Lynch play at the Wilbur Theatre. We spent the day in Boston wandering around the Boston Public Library, dining at Figs and laughing hysterically at the show. I was going to make a video of our day, but it turns out that when you film with an iPhone, all of the shots are awkward vertical rectangles. On our next adventure I'll definitely make a video with normal dimensions though! Anyways, here are some pictures from the day. Don't forget to follow me on Instagram to see more (IG name: alsgillette)!

Hi, hello!

As you can see, we had a fun day. But back to Stephen Lynch. For those of you who haven't heard of him, he is a singer/songwriter/comedian who writes ridiculous songs about various topics, like Tennessee, satan, tattoos and more. He is very crude, which I don't typically like crude humor, but I still enjoyed the show. One of my favorite songs of his is "Queer Tattoo," which I'll share below. P.S. this does not mean I don't like tattoos...I just think this song is funny. I don't want to offend anyone!

This show marked the end of my spring break. I don't feel like the week even happened anymore! Now I'm back to the daily grind. I hope you all are having a good weekend!

Happy St. Patrick's Day!

Happy St. Patrick's Day everyone! I was in Boston yesterday with friends to see the comedian Stephen Lynch perform, and the city was packed with St. Paddy's Day pub crawlers. I'm sure it was even crazier today with the parade. I'm only part Irish, so I don't go as crazy as the full Irish people. But, I do love some corned beef and cabbage. My family is having an Irish feast before I go back to school (spring break is officially over :( ). It should be delicious! Does anyone else have fun St. Patrick's Day plans?! I hope you all get a bit 'o luck today!

Sweet Deals

For most of our vacation my mom, grandparents and I went to the beach everyday! It was so sunny and warm. But on Tuesday morning we woke up to rain and cold winds, so we decided to go shopping. We poked through the shops downtown, grabbed some lunch and of course scoured the racks of the T.J. Maxx near my grandparents' condo. I can always count on T.J. Maxx to give me a sweet deal. This time, I got three!

These Dalia Collection shorts were originally $40 (they may have even been more), but I paid $19.99! I love the scallop hem line--so cute and nautical!

This Tahari pencil skirt was originally $168, but I paid $39.99! The skirt is actually a navy blue tweed material and has a zipper along the side. This photo does not do it justice at all, unfortunately. Sorry for the poor lighting! It fits perfectly.

These Michael Kors shorts were originally $79.50, but I paid $29.99! I love the navy and white polka dot pattern. Perfect for summer!

What did I tell you in my "Be A Maxxinista" post from a few months ago?! I took my own advice and got these sweet deals. All the more reason to be maxxinistas everyone! I'm not kidding when I say it. You can find some great deals.

Florida Photo Diary

My mom and I are back from Florida! I was sad to leave my grandparents and the warm weather, but I'm happy to be home with the rest of my family and friends before I head back to school. We had a great vacation relaxing on the beach, reading, shopping, eating and enjoying each other's company. I went a little Instagram crazy capturing all of the best parts of our trip, but I'm glad I took all of these pictures. Now I can share them with you! Here's my life from the past week (a few days before my trip, too) in Instagrammies:

My pretty pink manicure. I chose Essie Knock-out Pout.

My flight got cancelled on Friday due to the snow in Boston :( ...good news was that I got my first Sully's ice cream of the season at home! Mint patty is my favorite.

Our first night out in FL at Pop's Sunset Grill. They had delicious food and live music! I've never seen so many retirees and middle-aged folk burning it up on the dance floor--it was so adorable!

The most delicious fruit in FL. I ate so many sweet strawberries.

My only obligation for the week.

Flowers & Palm trees.

My Mum & I <3

Rainy day shopping outfit. Notice the bottle of aloe on the dresser--I got a little sunburnt!

Tanning poolside:)

Pretty walkway to the beach.

The harbor & pretty blue water.

Beautiful sunset at Sharky's. Missing this already!

I'm getting sad looking at these pictures already...take me back! We had a great trip, though. Did anyone else go somewhere away from home for spring break?! Please share!

My Go-to Airport Outfit

Tomorrow's the day I'm leaving for Florida! I'm so excited! I'm sure the airport will be packed with other college students going on spring break, too. Not sure what to wear while traveling to your spring break destination? Well, you've come to the right place. I know spending hours on planes and in airports can be tiring. I'm definitely not looking forward to sitting on a plane in a contained area for hours. So, it's important to dress comfortably! However, this does not mean you have to sacrifice style. I don't want to see any baggy sweatpants and hoodies!

Go-to Airport Outfit

Chambray: Madewell // V-neck: Madewell // Hair ties: Etsy // Tote bag: Longchamp // Sneakers: Nike // Leggings: American Eagle // Fleece: Patagonia

The best piece of clothing to wear while traveling is leggings/yoga pants. They are soft and stretchy, which allow for leg movement on a cramped plane. I know I always move my legs around on planes. I usually end up in weird positions just so my butt doesn't fall asleep, so leggings are what I opt for. They also still make you look put together because they are form fitting like skinny jeans.

I would also suggest layering while traveling. Even if you're not going from a cold location to a warm location, or vice versa, the temperatures of airports and planes vary. Sometimes airplanes can get cold with all the air blowing through the vents and high altitude. I plan on wearing the Madewell V-neck shown above (which actually has flecks of neon colors on it, you just can't tell from the picture. It's way more adorable, I swear), a Chambray shirt and my Patagonia fleece. I'm also wearing sneakers, mostly because they are the bulkiest item I'm bringing and won't fit in my suitcase, but they are also good for walking or running (hopefully not) to your terminal. Slip-on shoes or flats also work great, especially when you have to take your shoes off while going through security (rawr, I hate that part).

So, this is my go-to airport outfit! Is anyone else traveling this weekend for spring break? Please share your airport outfits! I'd love to hear how you work that airplane aisle! Safe travels!

Spring Break: What's In My Suitcase

How to pack for spring break
Sunglasses: Urban Outfitters // Floral and Striped Top: Madewell // Yellow Crop Top: O'Neill // Bikini: Polo Ralph Lauren (similar) // Pink Skinnies: Gap // White Skinnies: American Eagle // Peplum Tee: Daydreamer LA // Denim Cut-offs: BDG // Wedges: Calvin Klein // Earrings: Rent the Runway (Anton Heunis) // White Shorts: Volcom

Spring break is almost here...for BU at least! Three days, to be exact, and I'm so excited! My mom and I are traveling down to Florida to visit my grandparents. I can't wait to sit myself on the beach without a care in the world. Anyway, I know a lot of schools have spring break next week (or maybe even the week after that), so I figured I'd share what I'm packing in my suitcase for my tropical getaway.

As you can see, I'm bringing all sorts of bright colors--pinks,  blues and yellows. This should be quite a change from my current wardrobe of blacks, grays, blues and small pops of color, but I'm excited for it. Besides for packing bright colors, I would highly suggest bringing these these staple items:

  • Bathing suits - try to bring similar color pieces so you can mix and match!
  • Sunglasses - as my science professor reminded all of us today, we have to protect our eyes. But more importantly, bring some cool shades.
  • Shorts - both denim and colored. I would also suggest white shorts. I wear mine all the time in the summer.
  • Colored/White Skinnies - for when the sun goes down.
  • Sun dresses - perfect for hot, sticky weather!
  • Wedges - to show off your newly bronzed legs.
  • Denim jacket - for those cool evenings or breezy days.

This is just a basic outline of items you won't want to forget this spring break. I'm also bringing colorful jewelry, a big floppy hat and a good read! Does anyone else have big plans for spring break? Kicking it at home is always nice, too. I'll be doing that the latter half of the week. I hope everyone has fun and safe spring breaks! Please share what you're packing in your suitcase, too!

Check It Out: Unitiques

I'm always impressed by how innovative the students are around me at BU. They always come up with such creative ideas and actually go through with them to create amazing products and services. Alex Shadrow, a junior studying public relations here at Boston University, doesn't cease to impress. She had the genius idea of developing an online website called Unitiques that allows college students to buy and sell (or trade) clothes, accessories, furniture, sports equipment, appliances and more. How convenient!

Originally Shadrow created a group on Facebook called BUtiques, which was the same concept except only for BU students and was used more for swapping clothes. The group grew and Shadrow realized that college students all over were interested in the idea, so she decided to expand. On Februrary 22nd she launched the larger site, Unitiques. The site is for both men and women from various colleges across the country, including Boston College, Cornell, Bentley University, Suffolk University and Syracuse University, just to name a few.

Unitiques is continuing to expand. Shadrow says that soon the site will allow students to trade goods and sell tickets to student run events on campus. She also plans to add a roommate and apartment search feature, as well as a free mobile application for the site.

To celebrate Shadrow's successes so far and to say goodbye to the original BUtiques group, Unitiques and Her Campus BU are holding a Unitiques Launch Party on Wednesday, March 20th in the GSU Alley at Boston University. Students can bring clothes to swap, shop around the marketplace of student vendors and enjoy some free food!

Definitely check out the Unitiques site, ladies and gents! I just created an account myself, and I'm noticing a lot of great clothes and other goods on the market. All you have to do is create an account with your college email (proving that you're a college student). If your college is not already on the Unitiques site, contact Alex on the Unitiques Facebook or Twitter pages! Unitiques will not only allow you to save money on clothes, but it may just help you gain a little extra cash, too! Check it out!
